Global Electric Vehicle Adoption Statistics: Sales, Fleet Size and Growth

The IEA’s electric-car definition generally includes battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid cars. Sales and fleet stock answer different questions: sales measure new purchases during a period, while stock measures vehicles remaining in use.

Global measure Period Result
Electric-car sales 2024 More than 17 million; over 25% year-over-year growth
Electric share of new-car sales 2024 More than 20%
Electric-car fleet End of 2024 Almost 58 million; about 4% of passenger cars
Oil displacement estimate 2024 More than 1 million barrels per day

Source: Global EV Outlook 2025: Trends in electric car markets. The fleet figure and oil displacement are IEA estimates, and the latter is modeled rather than direct fuel-meter data.

The global electric-car fleet at the end of 2024 was more than three times its 2021 level. That comparison uses IEA fleet estimates and should not be read as a direct annual adoption rate.

The IEA expected global electric-car sales to exceed 20 million in 2025, representing about one-quarter of all car sales worldwide. This is a forecast published in 2025, subject to policy and economic uncertainty; observed first-quarter 2025 electric-car sales were up 35% year over year, which is not a full-year adoption rate.

China and Europe Electric Car Adoption Statistics by Market Share

China was the largest electric-car market in the 2024 data. It sold more than 11 million electric cars, almost half of all car sales were electric, and electric-car sales increased by almost 40% year over year.

  • China’s share of global electric-car sales rose from 50% in 2021 to almost two-thirds in 2024.
  • China’s electric-car sales share grew by approximately 10 percentage points annually for four consecutive years through 2024.
  • About 6.6 million consumers applied for China’s 2024 vehicle trade-in incentive, and 60% of applicants bought an electric car.
  • Plug-in hybrids excluding extended-range vehicles rose from about 15% of China’s electric-car sales in 2020 to nearly 30% in 2024.
  • Battery-electric cars fell from 80% of China’s electric-car sales in 2020 to below 60% in 2024, while absolute BEV sales increased sevenfold.

The applicant result concerns a trade-in incentive population, not all vehicle buyers. The BEV share and absolute-sales measures also describe different dimensions of the market.

Europe’s 2024 electric-car sales share was about one in five new cars. The share increased in 14 of the 27 European Union member states, a country count rather than a vehicle count.

U.S. electric-car sales reached 1.6 million in 2024 and exceeded 10% of car sales. Growth slowed to 10% in 2024 from 40% in 2023, using the IEA’s rounded annual rates.

Market or grouping Period Electric-car result
United States 2024 1.6 million sales; over 10% of car sales
Emerging and developing Asia, Latin America and Africa 2024 Sales grew over 60%; share rose from 2.5% to 4%
Southeast Asia 2024 9% sales share, almost double 2023
Outside China, Europe and the United States 2024 Forecast over 1 million sales; about 5% share

Outside the three major EV markets, the IEA expected more than 1 million electric-car sales in 2024, up more than 40% year over year, with about 5% of car sales electric. These are IEA estimates based on early-year data, not a later confirmed registration count.

The IEA projected India’s electric-car sales to grow about 50% in 2024. Southeast Asia’s 9% result is an observed regional aggregate, while the India figure is a pre-full-year projection.

Two-thirds of battery-electric cars sold in China in 2024 were cheaper than comparable internal-combustion-engine cars, according to IEA analysis of S&P Global Mobility and EV Volumes data. This is a price-comparison estimate, not a measure of total ownership cost.

Electric Vehicle Adoption Statistics by Vehicle Segment

Adoption differs sharply by vehicle type. Electric two- and three-wheelers already had a larger global sales and fleet presence in 2024 than electric buses or trucks, while the IEA’s stated-policies scenario projects different 2030 outcomes for each segment.

  • Electric two- and three-wheelers exceeded 9% of the global segment fleet in 2024.
  • China, India and Southeast Asia accounted for around 80% of global two- and three-wheeler sales in 2024.
  • In the stated-policies scenario, electric two- and three-wheelers reach nearly 50% of vehicles on the road worldwide by 2030.
  • In the same scenario, electric-bus sales remain below 20% globally in 2030, while slightly more than 10% of the global bus stock is electric.
  • Electric-truck sales reach around 13% globally in 2030 in the scenario, while electric trucks are about 3% of the truck stock.

Electric Truck and Bus Adoption Statistics

Heavy-duty adoption is developing unevenly across countries and vehicle types. Global electric-truck sales grew nearly 80% in 2024 and reached close to 2% of total truck sales, with China accounting for most of the market.

Heavy-duty measure Period Result
Global electric-truck sales 2024 Nearly 80% year-over-year growth; close to 2% of truck sales
China electric-truck sales 2024 75,000; more than 80% of global sales
Battery-electric truck models 2020 to 2024 Fewer than 70 to more than 400
U.S. electric-bus sales 2020 to 2024 More than 70% average annual growth

U.S. electric-bus sales fell about 40% in 2024 from the prior-year peak, with the IEA linking the decline partly to supply-chain issues. India sold more than 3,200 electric buses and South Korea more than 2,800 in 2024.

Latin American electric-bus sales rose from about 600 in 2020 to over 2,000 in 2024. Mexico’s electric buses were close to 8% of all bus sales in 2024, up from just above 1% in 2023; both are annual sales shares, not fleet shares.

China accounted for more than 80% of global electric medium- and heavy-duty truck sales in 2024. China’s electric medium- and heavy-duty truck sales share rose from 2% in 2023 to more than 4% in 2024.

Electric Two- and Three-Wheeler Adoption Statistics

The two- and three-wheeler segment recorded 10 million electric sales in 2024, around 15% of global segment sales. Its regional concentration matters because China, India and Southeast Asia together accounted for around 80% of sales.

The segment’s fleet share was more than 9% worldwide in 2024. The IEA’s vehicle definitions for this segment differ from its electric-car statistics, so these figures should not be combined into a single passenger-vehicle adoption rate.

Bus powertrain composition also changed over time. In China, plug-in hybrids were close to 0% of electric-bus sales in 2024, down from about 60% in 2014; outside China, PHEVs fell from around 60% of electric-bus sales in 2015 to around 1% in 2024.

EV Charging Infrastructure and U.S. Vehicle-Technology Statistics

Charging infrastructure is measured here in ports, meaning vehicles that can charge simultaneously, rather than stations, charging sessions or utilization. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Station Locator counted 188,096 public EV charging ports in the second quarter of 2024.

U.S. Station Locator measure Period Change or level
All listed EV charging ports Q1 to Q2 2024 Up 6.3%, or 12,485 ports
Public charging ports Q1 to Q2 2024 Up 6.5%, or 11,504 ports
Private charging ports Q1 to Q2 2024 Up 4.4%, or 981 ports
Public DC-fast ports Q2 2024 Up 7.4%, adding 3,047 ports
Public Level 2 ports Q2 2024 Up 6.3%, adding 8,415 ports
California share of public ports Q2 2024 26.3%

EPA vehicle-production data provide a separate view of U.S. technology adoption. BEVs were 7% of new-vehicle production in model year 2024, down from 10% in model year 2023; the EPA dataset covers light-duty vehicles.

The average model-year 2024 U.S. new vehicle achieved 27.2 mpg, up 0.1 mpg from 2023 and 41% from 2004. Without BEVs and PHEVs, the average was 1.7 mpg lower, a derived EPA counterfactual rather than a direct experiment.

In model year 2024, BEVs were 30% of U.S. car-SUV production and PHEVs were 3%. EPA’s within-category comparison says BEVs and PHEVs increased car-SUV fuel economy by 9.0 mpg; these are EPA fleet calculations and regulatory categories, not measured owner fuel use.
